Fire being held and evacuation order lifted in MD of Ranchland

Oct 27, 2017 | 5:38 PM

The Mandatory Evacuation Order and Alert for the MD of Ranchland has been rescinded as of 12:38 Friday (Oct 27) as the Chimney Rock Road fire is being held.

Alberta Emergency Alert reports travelers and residents should be aware that heavy smoke may remain along Highway 22 in the area affected by the fire causing decreased visibility. Any persons having trouble breathing due to the smoke should seek immediate medical assistance.

Residents should continue to take all necessary precautions, and are to follow the directions of local authorities as they return to their property.

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry says the Chimney Rock Fire in the Municipal District of Ranchland was 80 per cent contained as of Thursday, at which time it had covered more than 15 square kilometres but no buildings have been damaged or destroyed.

Numerous pieces of heavy machinery, backed up by helicopters with water buckets, worked on the fire that erupted earlier Wednesday.  At the time, wind gusts in the MD of Ranchland reached near 100-km/h.
