New charges added in alleged child abuse case

Oct 27, 2017 | 5:40 PM

A charge of failing to provide the necessaries of life has been laid against a 32-year-old man and 26-year-old woman from Lethbridge, who are accused of abusing a toddler.

The man was already facing a charge of assault causing bodily harm, while the woman – and mother of the child involved – had been charged with assault.

During a brief court appearance on Friday (Oct. 27), the man’s lawyer,Tyler Raymond, stated that they need time to prepare for a bail hearing, as they have received a substantial amount of disclosure that they must first review.

The matter was then adjourned to Nov. 24, along with the case for the mother, who is already out on release conditions.

Neither individual can be named to protect the identity of the child.

The charges against the them stem from an anonymous tip that came in to the Lethbridge Police Service on Sept. 21, which indicated a two-year-old child may be in danger.

Police immediately conducted a welfare check with the assistance of Child and Family Services. They say the boy had visible injuries to his face and neck, and a further examination at the Chinook Regional Hospital revealed injuries all over his body.

The child’s mother said he had fallen, but medical staff determined the injuries were not consistent with a fall.
