GPRC Women’s soccer squad prepping for nationals

The GPRC Women’s soccer squad leaves for nationals tomorrow in Halifax, N.S.

Head coach Chris Morgan is proud of how the team played at provincials.

“I couldn’t believe it. It was beyond our dreams. It was a good weekend,” he said.

“I’m delighted for the girls, delighted for the college, delighted for the program and everyone associated with it.”

After winning back-to-back provincial silvers, the team moved to nationals last year, where they placed sixth.

To be going back for another shot is a huge accomplishment, says Morgan.

“We were there for the first-time last year, and we just wanted to go back,” he said. “We were excited last year we made nationals and it was nice being a part of it.”

“But this year we wanted to go back, and hopefully if we can medal it will be even better.”

The team played three back-to-back games in playoff action last weekend, overtaking NAIT for gold.

“We played three games in three days, and we were brilliant in those games,” he said.

The first-place finishers in the regular season, Morgan isn’t counting out the competition at nationals.

“I don’t have any predictions … If we medal and we can get further (than last year), it’s just a bonus,” he said.

Regardless of how things go, Morgan is pleased a team that featured eight new recruits at the beginning came together so well.

“At the start of preseason, you’re looking and thinking ‘God, are we going to be okay?’ But it gelled quickly,” he said.

“We worked hard in training and it all came to a head last weekend.”

They’ll head to the east coast and Halifax, N.S. on Nov. 8 for nationals.
