Meteor shower peaks tonight

Dec 13, 2017 | 4:46 PM

Sky-watchers are hoping for a cloudless night tonight.

This is when the Geminid Meteor Shower is expected to peak.

“It just so happens that with the orbit of these particular objects, there is a very particular orbit that the Earth itself encounters and that is when you go through the most material left behind by that particular object,” says Astronomer Frank Florian with Telus World of Science in Edmonton. He adds this light show happens every year around this time.

“The Geminid Meteor Shower is the December meteor shower. It always takes place around the nights of December 13 and 14 and what you expect to see when you look upon a nice, clear night are a bunch of little streaks of light across the sky and out of the meteor showers in the year, the Geminid Meteor shower is one of the better ones.”
