Fire department reminds residents to keep hydrant access clear

Feb 5, 2018 | 5:00 AM

Grande Prairie fire department is asking residents to remember to keep snow clear from fire hydrants as they shovel out from last week’s excessive snow fall.

Although all hydrants in the city are mapped, officials say precious time needed to battle a fire is lost when fire fighters have to dig out the hydrants themselves.

Ideally, they ask that you clear a one metre radius around the hydrant, as well as a path from it to the road.

According to city by-laws, home and business owners are required to clear snow away from fire hydrants on or adjacent to their property, and can be fined for failing to do so.

Grande Prairie has received over 51 centimetres of snow since last Monday.
