Winter Walk Day Wednesday in GP

Feb 6, 2018 | 3:26 PM

Wednesday is Winter Walk Day in Grande Prairie and Alberta Health Services is encouraging everyone to get outside for 15 minutes or more of exercise.

“Winter Walk Day is important because it’s cold and snowy in Alberta during the winter and it causes a lot of people to want to stay indoors and not do a whole lot of physical activity,” said Garrett Richardson, Health Promotions Facilitator with AHS.  “Physical activity is a big part in overall heath and especially with cancer and chronic disease prevention.”

There will be a group meeting tomorrow at Muskoseepi Reservoir for the walk starting at noon.

If you can’t make it to the reservoir, you can organize something with your school or workplace, or friends or family.

Participants are reminded to dress warmly and wear proper footwear. Tomorrow’s forecasted high is minus 17.

Because it’s a provincial competition, you’re asked to log your walk online.

“In 2010 there was a bit of awareness money available and the City of Grande Prairie had around 10,000 people register online,” said Richardson. “In recent years it hasn’t been quite as popular, but there’s still a few thousand every year that go online and register that they’ve walked for their 15 minutes.”
