Grande Prairie Regional Tourism Association seeking more funding

Feb 8, 2018 | 6:19 AM

An organization tasked with bringing people to the region for leisure is asking for more money from its municipal partners.

Grande Prairie Regional Tourism Association Chair Johnathan Clarkson says their current funding model isn’t sustainable.

“Basically, what we have done is go tour municipal partners and said this is the situation in order to continue moving forward based on things like the Travel Alberta contract only being up for a one-year renewal. Just with regular inflation we still haven’t seen an increase in our funding even just with the rate of inflation over the last ten years.”

The organization works to bring people to events and places in the region – from across Canada and within the peace country.

He says they need an increase in their per-capita based funding to continue to be able to exist.

“And also do the best that we can for the region in terms of providing the services that we do, last year, for example, we had just as many people come through our visitor centre here in Grande Prairie as Camrose actually saw last year during their summer months with the Canada 150 celebrations going on.”

Clarkson says the association continues to apply for co-op marketing dollars from the province. According to Clarkson, those aren’t meant for long-term operational funds and continue to diminish.
