Avalanche warning issued for Alberta & B.C. Parks

Backcountry skiers, snowboarders and snowshoers are being asked to stay out of avalanche terrain in Alberta and British Columbia.

A special avalanche warning is in place for Banff, Yoho, Kootenay, Jasper, Mount Revelstoke and Glacier national parks, as well as much of Kananaskis Country.

For the past two weeks, these regions have been in a prolonged period of elevated avalanche danger and a major avalanche cycle where numerous large avalanches have run into the valley bottom.

With a major snowfall this week and the skies clearing for the weekend, Parks Canada specialists say it will be tempting for skiers and snowboarders to head into the backcountry.

But they say it’s still very touchy out there.

Recreational backcountry users should manage their risk by completely avoiding avalanche terrain including exposure to overhead avalanche terrain.

Several recent avalanches were triggered from up to 100 metres away from the slope.

Skiers at ski hills should stay inbounds and not venture beyond the ski-area boundary.

The warning, which is in place until Monday, extends into interior B-C.
