How to keep local news showing up in your Facebook news feed

Feb 16, 2018 | 4:30 AM

Recent changes to Facebook mean you will see more posts from friends and family, and less from local news sources.

Andrew Snook, Director of Digital with the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group says the average person has more than 300 friends on Facebook and most people do not have the time to scroll through and see everything that has been posted by all their friends.

He says Facebook needed to find ways to show the content that they think is going to be most relevant to its users.  So now posts from friends will be prioritized over content from brands and news.

And with the changes, even if a news post has a lot of likes, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will show up on your feed.

“Likes now are a little less meaningful and comments are more valuable,” explained Snook. “If there’s an article where somebody close to you has posted an intelligent comment on that article, that (post is) more likely to show up on your feed.”

With likes being less valuable, the “like this post and share” contests will be a lot less effective now.

If you want local news, like EverythingGP, to keep showing up on your feed, you can make a couple quick changes.

On Facebook on a desktop:

> On the page where you clicked “Like”, click on the “Follow/ing” drop box

> Choose “See First”

On the Facebook mobile app:

> Settings (three horizontal lines)

> News Feed Preferences

> Prioritize who to see first

> Done
