New Catholic school coming to Grande Prairie

Mar 23, 2018 | 1:40 PM

The 20 new schools announced today by the province includes one for Grande Prairie.

The government says it will be a new Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools K to 9 for O’Brien Lake West. It would have room for 950 students.

Board Chair Michael Ouellette says the District has been lobbying for a new school for the last four to five years.

“We’ve experienced about a 25 percent growth in the past five years. It’s leaving us no flexibility for students and staff in our schools, so we really needed this new school.”

He adds O’Brien Lake West has seen a lot of families move to the area.

“We don’t have a school out there. We thought that the best place was O’Brien Lake West. It’s also a serviced area. The government wanted wherever you picked a school for it to be serviced.”

Ouellette says two of the District’s schools, Mother Teresa and St.Gerard, have 21 modular classrooms.

“You can only imagine how much we’ve had to extend the growth in putting modulars on the schools, so this new announcement is so exciting for us.”

Design work will begin right away. The projected opening date in the spring of 2021.
