DeBolt firefighter starts fund-raiser for Humboldt bus crash first responders

Apr 11, 2018 | 6:07 PM

A volunteer firefighter with the DeBolt Fire Department is raising money to help the emergency personnel that were called out to the Humboldt Broncos bus crash.

Clark Peters says he has worked in emergency services for 13 years and knows how PTSD can impact someone in that job.

“When you go to a call, sometimes it can be something small that sets it off or it can be something big. It could be something as small as an injury or as big as a fatality that would set PTSD off. Some of the things a person would go through would be depression or anxiety, re-occurring thoughts or patters relating to the event itself. “

He adds emergency people often second-guess themselves after dealing with a call.

“We’re under such pressure at an emergency scene that you have to make quick decisions and you have to make the right decisions and often, you question yourself as to whether that was the best thing you could have done when you’re dealing with that type of event.”

Peters hopes to raise $10,000. He says the money will be donated to the fire departments in Tisdale and Nipawin, Saskatchewan.

“The intent with this money is to just offer relief in terms of counseling or any way that they find that will help them through this event.”
