Bus service a welcome addition to event: GP Stompede President

Apr 17, 2018 | 5:06 AM

A bus pilot-project for an event this spring is a welcome addition.

The city will provide a bus service for the Grande Prairie Stompede as a Gift-in-Kind. Stompede President Trevor Denis says they have started to think about the details.

“I think anytime we can help people get down to our event as well as partner with the city, it is a fantastic opportunity,” said Denis.

He explains that the proposed plan would have residents get on the bus for free at the Town Centre Mall travel to Evergreen, and then back. For now, the plan is to have people use the service from noon until approximately 9:30 p.m. each of the four days.

Denis says they are not looking ahead to 2019 yet, but if there were another bus service in the future, they would leave it up to the city.

“There is a lot of logistics and insurance that go along with (providing a bus).”

Final details on the bus service will be provided closer to the event, according to the president.

Providing a safe ride home for those partaking in alcoholic beverages and parking issues were cited as reasons to try the pilot at this event by the City of Grande Prairie.

The event runs from May 30 to June 3 and the organizers are hopeful that Mother Nature will cooperate.

“We used a snow blower on the track last week which is being covered with snow again. It is hard to see right now, but we are still about six weeks out,” said Denis as he laughed.
