Sentences handed down in three court cases

A fiery crash in May of 2016 on Driftpile First Nation that left three people dead has led to jail time for one of the drivers involved.
 
Alberta Justice says Edna Jean Smith of Grande Prairie has been given 28-months each on three counts of criminal negligence causing death and 18-months for a single charge of criminal negligence causing bodily harm. The sentences will run concurrently. Smith’s trial was held last week in Peace River.
 
High Prairie RCMP said that on May 1, 2016, at around 3 p.m., they were called to a three-vehicle crash on the Highway 2 bridge at Driftpile.
 
A westbound SUV hit an eastbound car before striking an eastbound van, after which the van caught fire.
 
The 36-year-old woman driving the van, a 12-year-old boy and an 11-month-old girl all died. A bystander pulled a 4-year-old girl out of the burning van. Two 17-year-olds who were in the car were treated at the scene.
 
 
Nine-month conditional sentence after child suffers burns

 
A man who pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to provide the necessaries of life after a child suffered burns has been given a nine-month conditional sentence.
 
Robin Todd Mclean entered the plea and was sentenced in Grande Prairie Court of Queen’s Bench.
 
The sentence, handed down Friday, includes a long list of conditions, including house arrest and a curfew.
 
Court heard that in the summer of 2015, McLean was in charge of caring for a child when he fell asleep. The child was in a bathtub, managed to turn on the hot water, and was scalded. The toddler was flown to the Stollery for treatment, but is fine now, other than some scarring on one foot.
 
In handing down the sentence, the judge said McLean realizes he made a serious mistake and is confident he has learned from that mistake.
 
 
Three-year-plus sentence in drug bust

 
A drug arrest in July of last year has led to a three year, one-month jail sentence for one of the people involved.
 
Jeante Maddox pleaded guilty to four charges, two related to trafficking and two firearms counts April 4 in Grande Prairie court. The remaining 11 charges he was facing were withdrawn.
 
Grande Prairie RCMP said July 13, 2017, they arrested a man and woman and searched a vehicle in the parking lot of a pharmacy. They seized 35 grams of cocaine, 13 grams of methamphetamine, cash and a firearm that had been stolen in a break and enter.
