Snow pushes start of baseball season back into May

Apr 19, 2018 | 10:47 AM

The City of Grande Prairie experienced an immense amount of snowfall over the course of the early stretches of 2018, and it has affected everyone.

This includes the Grande Prairie Baseball Association.

” It was the accumulation over the course of the winter and obviously the February and March snowfalls are what’s really setting us back here in April, ” explained President of the GPBA Jason Van Buskirk.

April is typically the busiest month for the GPBA.

With this in mind, the Association is unsure of when teams will be able to get on the diamonds in Grande Prairie.

The Baseball Association have tried to speed up the process by going to some of the fields and blowing out some of the snow which has built up.

However, they still need some help from Mother Nature and are hoping they can receive some consistent warm weather.

As of right now, the competitive teams are set in stone and are currently practicing at the County Sportsplex. Now the Association is organizing its house league teams.

When it comes to a potential start date out on the fields, Van Buskirk said this was the unknown, and with that in mind, they may have to push their house league season into July so players can still play a full two month season.

The GPBA is hoping best case scenario that they are able to get out into the fields by the 2nd week of May.
