Police find mother of baby allegedly abandoned in Toronto, investigation ongoing

Jan 16, 2018 | 2:46 PM

Toronto police say they’ve found the mother of a newborn baby boy who was allegedly abandoned Tuesday morning outside a commercial building.

The mother is receiving medical care, police said, but declined to provide further details.

They said they received a call just before 11 a.m. from someone claiming to be a passerby who found the infant behind a plaza in the city’s west end.

Initially, police said they received reports that the baby was found naked on the ground outside the building.

They said a passerby claimed to have put clothing on the boy and brought him to a safe indoor area before calling police.

The baby was indoors when officers arrived, said Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu.

She said that when police arrived, “the baby was conscious, breathing and murmuring,” although his health was in jeopardy.

Paramedics said the baby was rushed to a hospital where he remained in critical condition Tuesday evening.

Sidhu said police did not yet know when or where the baby was born.

Before the baby’s mother was located, Const. David Hopkinson said police were concerned about her condition.

“If the baby was delivered sometime very (recently), then that person that delivered that baby may be in distress,” he said.

The police investigation into the matter is ongoing.
