Northwest Alberta Sports Excellence Awards accepting nominations

The Northwest Alberta Sports Excellence Awards presented by the Grande Prairie Sports Council are set for the beginning of March, and the nomination period is currently open.

Wendy Moar with Alberta Sports Development Centre Northwest explained how the event is a night to honour well deserving citizens who are involved in the sports community in our region.

“We recognize both high performing athletes and coaches, as well as community sport. Those range from sports builder, unsung hero, community sportsmanship, official of the year to our athletes of the year, teams of the year, and coach of the year,”

This is the 4th year of the awards, and this year there will some new accolades which the Sports Council will be handing out.

“We have two new categories this year. The first being the community sportsmanship award. This is open to an individual or a group that in addition to their sport, contributes back to their community or demonstrates good sportsmanship. The second new category is sports event of the year, ” revealed Moar.

To qualify for any of the awards, a nominee must live in Northwestern Alberta.

Nominations for all of the awards close on January 31st, and the event is scheduled for March 2nd.
