Local roller derby club hoping to grow

Jan 20, 2018 | 6:00 AM

The Grande Prairie Roller Derby Association is hoping to grow the sport.

Player and league vice president T N Tina says the club had up to 80 members at one point. That has now dropped to five to eight regulars.

“There are different mixed teams and stuff, but mostly women come out to skate. They have children, so that sets them out for a bit. Sometimes, people get injured or sometimes their jobs get in the way. We used to have strong requirements for people to follow, like certain attendance policies and stuff, but being Grande Prairie, the way the economy is here, we’ve been a little more lenient.”

Player and league president Hacksaw says communities like Whitecourt, Grimshaw, and High Level have roller derby teams.

“I just think that all these smaller communities that have teams, we need a team. We (have) bigger numbers here, why don’t we have a team to go and play. We need 14 people to play in a game, but it doesn’t just stop there, because we also need non-skating officials, referees, announces, all the volunteers.”

They both add something that would help would be having a home arena in Grande Prairie. They currently practice at the Clairmont Arena.

The club has organized a Try-It Day for February 3 at the Bowes Family Gardens at Revolution Place.
