EDMONTON- Alberta Health Services has issued an apology to the mother of a three-year-old girl after the woman says her child’s hand was damaged by an intravenous following open-heart surgery.
Jalena Gunther says her daughter, Emmy, had the surgery on January 16th at Edmonton’s Stollery Children’s Hospital and was expected to go home early this week but her IV pump acted up last Friday.
Gunther says no one with the hospital checked on the pump and by Saturday Emmy needed emergency surgery on her hand, but she worries that the IV problem may have already caused permanent damage.
The mother says she plans to launch a formal complaint and wants the incident investigated.
