Are You Sensitive?

The Olympics were killing me. I loved watching the athletes soar through the air, twirl around on the ice (even though I felt nauseous), sweep, shoot, and complete seemingly impossible feats.

But… I am a self-diagnosed ‘highly sensitive person’ and I could barely stand the ups and downs of emotions that I felt when watching. I rejoiced with the winners but my heart broke for the ones who crashed, slipped, fell or otherwise faced overwhelming disappointment.

I couldn’t imagine working a lifetime for a moment of glory, neither could I imagine handling the disappointment that most of those athletes have to handle. Let’s face it, there are a lot more are ‘losers’ than there are ‘winners’. Even though I think just making it there you should count as winning.

Mostly during the games I wondered why I was so emotionally affected watching events such as these, or by viewing the news or movies or a hundred others things that seem to emotionally affect me more than the average bear.

If this resonates with you or sounds like someone in your life, you may want to check out The Highly Sensitive Person a book by Dr. Elaine Aron and/or the documentary Sensitive. It’s very validating for the minority of us that seem to take things very much to heart, often to our detriment. We can stop apologizing for being ‘feelers’ and simply acknowledge that this is a trait we have and it is ours to own, sometimes for the better and sometimes not.

This trait makes us, us – compassionate, caring and loving individuals. That’s not so bad is it?

Check out the book and/or the documentary to help you better understand yourself or those in your life that carry this trait.

The Olympics are over for another two years, but I’ve still got the National Anthem to cry over.
