Energy and Finance Minister make stop at City Hall

Apr 25, 2018 | 2:03 PM

The Energy Minister and Finance Minister made a stop at City Hall this afternoon to speak with the Mayor and council.

Marg McCuiag-Boyd and Joe Ceci have been making stops around the northern part of the province this week to speak on the 2018 budget.

“I have been sharing the three pillars that the budget is based on. These include keeping programs and services fully funded, so that Albertans don’t experience negatives results from the recession. We are in recovery now,” said Ceci.

“The second pillar of the budget is diversification of revenue streams. Minister McCuaig-Boyd has been doing a really great job advocating how we need to diversify, so we get more value from the energy resources that are here instead of shipping the raw product out and importing them back at higher prices.”

Ceci says the third pillar is about the capital plan and making sure investments are going into schools, hospitals, and post-secondary facilities.

As part of their travels, the Minister says they are able to talk about things that are going well and things that need work. He says the City has thanked the province for the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) funding and degree-granting status for the Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC). One thing pointed out by Grande Prairie council was the need for affordable housing, according to Ceci.

“We have heard a lot of people grateful that we have been addressing the roads, not cutting back in services like hospitals and schools, and social programs,” said McCuaig-Boyd.

“People move to communities because of those services. People in the smaller towns are especially grateful that we have put some money into those. We are looking at ways we can put money into economic development and looking at ways we can retain people in our communities,” she said.

She says she will be bringing any concerns back to her government.
