Okabe named finalist for CJHL Top Rookie Award

The Canadian Junior Hockey League, which is made up of all of the Junior A league’s across Canada announced Tuesday morning their finalists for their Top Rookie Award.

Among the finalists is Grande Prairie Storm rookie forward Zachary Okabe.

Okabe captured the Dick White trophy as Rookie of the Year in the Alberta Junior Hockey League and finished in the Top 25 in league scoring by racking up 20 goals and 33 assists.

He also added 1 goal and 4 assists in the playoffs.

Other notable names to win the AJHL Rookie of the Year award include Stu Barnes, Mike Comrie, and Dany Heatley.

Okabe also committed to the University of Vermont as a 16-year-old back in September.

Other nominee’s for the award include Alex Newhook of the Victoria Grizzlies, Jack Quinn of the Kanata Lasers, Keighan Gerrie of the Thunder Bay North Stars, and Jacob Wasserman of the Humboldt Broncos.

The CJHL Top Rookie Award winner will be announced in the coming days.
