Toronto Wolfpack bolster backline with Scottish international Matty Russell

May 1, 2018 | 10:43 AM

Toronto Wolfpack have signed Scottish international back Matty Russell.

The 24-year-old, whose deal runs through 2020, had been with the Super League Warrington Wolves.

Russell made his Super League debut in 2011 with the Wigan Warriors. He moved to Hull FC on loan before playing a season in Australia with the Gold Coast Titans.

He spent four seasons with Warrington, scoring 31 tries in 97 appearances.

“He is going to add more quality and competition to the backline and is comfortable on the wing and fullback,” Toronto coach Paul Rowley said in a statement.

Rowley has been looking to add to his squad, which currently tops the second-tier Betfred Championship with a 10-1-1 record.

Toronto plays at home for the first time this season when it hosts Swinton Lions (0-10-1) on Saturday. The game is being held at Fletcher’s Fields north of the city because of renovations to Lamport Stadium.
