Track and field season gets underway this weekend

May 11, 2018 | 5:30 AM

The 16th annual Peace Country Classic and GP Kids Track Meet takes place on Saturday.

Kids from both sides of the Peace, along with the Northwest Territories, will compete in the event to be held at Legion Field.

Peace Country Wolves Athletics Club President Bill Corcoran says there will be a lot on the line for the older students who aspire to compete at the 2018 Alberta Summer Games.

“It’s a good opportunity for any of the kids who are in Junior High and Grade 10 and 11 who want to try out for the Alberta Summer Games team. This is the trials for it.”

Corcoran says there are several spots up for grabs for participants.

“There is a midget category and a youth category and then there are male and female [categories]. There are 11 [spots] in each category.”

The turnout is expected to be the same as in year’s previous.

“We usually get a couple hundred people. It’s a real mixed group. We have anywhere from kids in Grade 1 and 2 all the way up to old folks.”

Sixteen-year-old Kobe Grocholski of Beaverlodge is someone to keep an eye on according to Corcoran. He recently captured a silver medal at U-16 Nationals last year. He’s looking to qualify for the Summer Games in the U-18 800m, 1,500m and 3,000m races.
