Getting out of your own way

The best advice I’ve ever received – and I’ve received a lot, has got to be this piece…

Get out of your own way.

Said to me by my first mentor, the person that encouraged me to be trained as a personal coach when no one in my circles even knew what that was. The one that encouraged me to join the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers when I was just getting paid chicken dinners to speak. The one who said put your picture on the back of your book, people want to see you. The one who always implied ‘yes you can’, the one who gave me that questioning look when negativity and doubt spewed out of my mouth, the one who challenged me with ‘why not’ at every turn.

For every excuse I had, every whine and reason – it all came back to the same thing, no one else was stopping me, I just had to get out of my own way.

Twelve years into this crazy, wonderful business of speaking to inspire and that advice has stood the test of time, allowed me to have amazing experiences and allowed me to influence and impact more people than I ever thought possible.

Is the biggest thing that’s holding you back from creating a life you truly love and from making an even greater impact in the world, you?

Today’s thought is simple – get out of your own way. What needs to change in between your ears? What do you need to stop saying to yourself? What do you need to start saying to yourself? Who do you need to add to your life? What do you need to get rid of or lessen?

Get out of your own way – you have important s**t to do – the world needs you shining, advancing, thriving!

Create what you want. Lean into success. Ask for what you need. Take what is waiting to be taken. Shove the excuses, whines and reasons into a little compartment and lock it tight. Do something that scares the crap out of you, or surprises someone else, or makes you feel how you want to feel.

Getting out of your own way – it’s just one more way to live Your Life, Unlimited!

PS – If you’re wondering who my mentor was, her name is Benita Stafford-Smith and she is currently living her life unlimited coaching and thriving in Oman!
