Yukon NDP to hold leadership race as Liz Hanson announces she’s stepping down

Nov 21, 2018 | 5:00 PM

WHITEHORSE — Yukon New Democrat leader Liz Hanson says she’s stepping down from the position, saying the party needs someone who will bring new energy ahead of the next election.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Hansons says she will continue to serve as leader until her successor is appointed following a leadership race.

She also plans to continue representing the constituents of Whitehorse-Centre as their member of the legislature.

The NDP holds two seats in the legislature, making it the third party.

The Liberal party holds power under Premier Sandy Silver with 11 seats and the Opposition Yukon party holds six.

The NDP says its board of directors will establish the rules and timeline for a leadership race over the coming weeks.

“I’m proud of the work we have done since I was first elected in December 2010. I will continue to work hard to hold the government to account in the Legislative Assembly and to make sure Yukoner’s voices are heard,” Hanson says in the statement.

“Now is the time to start proposing a clear and positive political alternative for Yukoners: a leadership race is a great opportunity to talk about the kind of government Yukoners want.”
