Steph Curry springs into action after shoe complaint from nine-year-old fan

TORONTO — Star athletes can’t slow Steph Curry down. But a nine-year-old fan with a bone to pick stopped the Golden State Warrior in his tracks.

Riley Morrison of Napa, Calif., wrote to Curry to point out that she couldn’t buy his new Curry 5 basketball shoe because there weren’t available in the girls section of the Under Armour website. They were available for boys.

“I know you support girl athletes because you have two daughters and you host an all-girls basketball camp,” Riley said in a polite handwritten note. “I hope you can work with Under Armour to change this because girls want to rock the Curry 5’s too.”

She wanted the shoes for her new basketball season.

Riley’s father Chris Morrison posted the letter on social media, saying “Her way of attempting to make a difference. Proud of her.”

He also posted Curry’s handwritten reply.

The NBA star wrote he had spent the last two days talking to Under Armour to fix the problem.

 “Unfortunately we have listed smaller sizes as ‘boys’ on the website,” he wrote.

“We are correcting this NOW!” he added.

Curry said he would send Riley a pair of the shoes and said she would be one of the first kids to get the Curry 6 model. He also told her he had something special in the works March 8 for International Women’s Day.

“And I want you to celebrate with me! More on that to come. But plan to be in Oakland that night.”

Curry’s actions brought a smile to Golden State coach Steve Kerr.

“I saw that. It doesn’t surprise me one bit,” Kerr said prior to Thursday night’s game against the Raptors. “Steph, as great of a player as he is, he’s an equally impressive human being — just his interaction with our fans, just people in general who he comes across.

“And it’s all genuine. That’s the beauty of Steph. He understands his power. He understands the impact he can make on people’s lives. And I’m just incredibly proud of him and our other guys. I think we have a whole team full of guys like that. But Steph stands out because of the amount of attention he gets and the adoration he receives from millions of young teenage boys and girls everywhere.

“Again I love the fact that Steph is aware of his impact and utilizes it for nothing but the good of other people.”

The 30-year-old Curry, who missed Thursday’s game against the Raptors because of injury, has ties to Toronto.

His wife Ayesha Curry was born in Toronto and his father Dell Curry played for the Raptors.
