Council highlights January 15

Grande Prairie City Council held its first meeting of 2024 on Monday.

Council approved an updated version of its Municipal Development Plan. A review took 14 months to complete. City administration says the new guide to land development in Grande Prairie has seen some ineffective policies removed and replaced, some things have been clarified, and things completed have been removed. A land acknowledgement was also added, as were updated population numbers. People from the development industry described the new plan as a good middle ground.

Council spent the afternoon session looking at highlights from committee meetings that took place January 9. Those included the following:

  • Phase 3 of the Coordinated Care Campus renovations should be complete in early February. This work includes finishing 43 housing units on the top floor plus completing the municipal offices that will be moving in. That move-in will be done in the next few weeks.
  • City Hall is asking pet owners to license their animals through the City’s website. This is required under city bylaws. The registry includes contact information in case a pet gets lost. The money this brings supports the regional animal pound.
  • The City says 220 people have signed up for a new texting service since it launched late in 2023. It allows people to receive news releases and notifications on roads, transit and snow removal by text message. People can customize this service for the notifications they want to receive and for their own neighbourhood. It is done through AccessGP. The city also says AccessGP received 59,000 phone and email inquiries in 2023.
  • A document called the 2023 Retail Market and Gap Analysis shows Grande Prairie’s total trade area now numbers 295,000 people and retail catchment area spending reached $5 billion.

Council also approved having the 2024 budget for the Downtown Business Improvement Area come back before council for approval on March 11. There is a total of $302,507 in the spending plan, a zero per cent increase from last year. Just over half is for salaries and administration. There is also $51,000 for beautification, $50,220 for promotion, and $10,000 for special events. Council also approved having all the businesses in the area notified of the new plan to look at the budget by letter.
