County shares another update on the wildfire situation

May 12, 2024 | 11:15 AM

The County of Grande Prairie has provided it’s seventh update on the current wildfire situation.

At the Teepee Creek wildfire, crews worked overnight to establish 80 per cent of the fireguard, they reported limited growth and positive containment.

Additional resources and heavy equipment are on the scene today from Alberta Wildfire, with Air Tankers being mobilized to fight the blaze, pending on conditions.

The Teepee Creek Fire does remain classified as out of control, but since the County’s last update yesterday evening, it has stayed the same size, 1,382 hectares.

An evacuation order remains in effect for anyone living in the Kleskun Creek north to Township Road 742 area, and Riverstone Golf Course.

Grande Prairie RCMP does want to remind residents that re-entry is not permitted during an evacuation order and to “follow the directions of officers, as it is extremely important for your safety, as well as the safety of first responders.”

The County added, “we appreciate offers of help and assistance. The fire response is well-resourced and has adequate support at this time.”

Currently, no new information was given on the Vahalla blaze however, in yesterday’s update the County said they would be pulling back their operations this morning and allow Alberta Wildfire to “mop up.”

Any smoke in the Grande Prairie region today is credited to the Fort Nelson wildfire, Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement.
