Grande Prairie will ice two Bantam AA hockey teams come fall

May 10, 2018 | 11:25 AM

Grande Prairie will be getting a second AA Bantam hockey team for the 2018/19 season.

President of the Grande Peace Athletic Club Tyler Stojan says the addition of another team has been in the works for some time now.

“This is something that Hockey Alberta has been advising us for the last three years. For the last three years, we have had to write letters requesting an exemption from it until this season.”

Stojan said a surplus of kids in Grande Prairie and surrounding area are part of the reason for another team.

“Hockey Alberta is obviously strongly urging us to go to this model. There are a number of communities throughout Alberta that have to do this type of thing already. For example, St. Albert has three teams. So, it’s not uncommon for our draw zone and draw area.”

Stojan expects both teams to be strong for next season.

“When you say are we going to be competitive, I believe we will be. I think it’s development throughout the whole season. I think it encourages everybody to play and I think it encourages everybody to strive to be better as a team as well.”

The current Bantam AA Storm played to their best season on record last year.

The new team will join the Northern Alberta Hockey League’s Black Division along with the GP Storm, Fort St. John, Whitecourt, Peace River and Dawson Creek.
