The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada is investigating the use of facial recognition technology at shopping centres following media reports that it’s happening at malls in Winnipeg and Calgary.
The Alberta Information and Privacy Commissioner has also opened an investigation.
Cadillac Fairview, which owns the malls, says they don’t record or store content.
The company says the cameras are used to provide traffic analysis, understand usage patterns and create a better shopping experience.
