ASIRT concludes High Prairie RCMP investigation

Apr 30, 2025 | 2:53 PM

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has concluded an investigation involving High Prairie RCMP.

A file from March, 26, 2020 was under investigation after the arrest of a man at a residence in Sucker Creek First Nation led to a two day stay at the hospital for the suspect.

According to ASIRT’s report, officers from both Lakeshore Regional Police Services and High Prairie RCMP attended the residence and tried to take a suspect into custody without incident. Police had received reports of him being an unwanted guest, causing damage, and “potentially in possession of a knife” and “potentially assaulted someone.”

Once officers arrived, the man was noted to have blood stains on him. He threatened police from the porch before re-entering the residence.

This led RCMP to follow him inside and tase the man twice, before dragging him outside, due to his size. (265lbs according to ASIRT).

Once outside, the man was laid on the ground by a police cruiser with a blanket under him, as there was still snow on the ground.

The report said he was responsive, and officers performed sternum rubs to ensure they were responsive, however, the man eventually became unresponsive. EMS was called and said he was displaying signs of a seizure.

As a result, the man was taken to a hospital for two days before recovering.

In his interview with ASIRT, he told them he had been “drinking for two to three days, mourning the recent death of his aunt,” and when he woke up in Intensive Care Unit, he “did not remember what happened and the next thing he recalled (he) was waking up in the Grande Prairie hospital.”

As a result, ASIRT has concluded officers “were lawfully placed and acting properly in the execution of their duties.”
