Emergency Preparedness Week across Canada amid evacuations

May 5, 2025 | 2:12 PM

With GPREP currently involved with evacuation efforts for residents residing south of Grande Prairie, they are also reminding residents to be more prepared in the face of an emergency.

This is part of it’s Emergency Preparedness Week initiative (May 4 – May 10), with this year’s theme; “Be Prepared, Know your risks.”

Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with emergency plans, understand local risks and be ready for the unexpected.

Five tips were also shared by GPREP:

  1. Get and stay informed – Follow @GPREPalerts on Facebook and X for accurate, timely information during emergencies.
  2. Know the risks – Understand which emergencies are most likely in the Grande Prairie region.
  3. Make a plan – Talk with your household about where to go and what to do if an emergency occurs.
  4. Build an emergency kit – Prepare to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.
  5. Connect with your community – Knowing your neighbours can make a difference in an emergency.

More tips and resources will be shared throughout the week, and will be available by visiting the Alberta Government’s website.
