Poppy campaign kicks off in Grande Prairie

The Legion’s presentation of the first poppy to Mayor Bill Given Friday morning signalled the start of the annual Poppy Campaign.

Judi Thomas, president of the GP legion, says the community in Grande Prairie is always there to help before Remembrance Day.

“I think the community does a really good job. The schools just keep getting better and better all the time,” she said. “They seem to be a lot more interested in it now.”

One issue they’re hoping to curb is the theft of poppies this year. Thomas didn’t have a solution, but lamented the issues it causes.

“It’s terrible. They’re not stealing from the legion. They’re stealing from the veterans that fought for this country, and for their freedom,” she said.

Mayor Bill Given wants residents to reflect on the significance of wearing poppies.

“I really hope now that the poppy campaign is underway, that Grande Prairie residents will use this as an opportunity to go out, get a poppy and support our veterans,” he said.

He also wants people to “remember those who served” in support of the country.

Poppies can be picked up at major stores and restaurants, with proceeds going to support local veterans and the RCMP.
