Kelly Sutherland to be saluted tonight

Oct 28, 2017 | 11:39 AM

Many people will head to Evergreen Park tonight to pay tribute to a legendary 50-year career in chuckwagon racing.

Clarkson Hall will host A Salute to Kelly Sutherland.

“Grande Prairie has really been blessed with the home to many world champions and top drivers from that area in chuckwagon racing. I’ve had lots of support from the Grande Prairie and North Peace area. I’d just like to thanks because a lot of them have followed the sport for well over 40 to 50 years,”

Sutherland is the only driver to race in all 40 editions of Stompede. He won twelve world titles and twelve Calgary Stampede championships.

“I’d hate to use the reference again, but Gretzky…when [he] retired the world held its collective breath and said, “wow, what will hockey do”. Then you get a Sidney Crosby come along,” said Chuckwagon Heritage Foundation President Justin Tidd following the announcement of Sutherland’s retirement.

The event at Evergreen Park is sold-out.
