Judo athletes win big in Eastern tournaments

Nov 15, 2017 | 10:06 AM

Two local judo athletes have managed top honours at two eastern competitions.
Sydney Kinderwater and Michelle Grisales, both part of Hoku Sei Kan Judo Club, medalled in Ontario and Quebec over the last two weekends.
Kinderwater didn’t medal in Quebec, but she won third in Ontario in U16. Grisales got second in U16 in Quebec, and got third in Ontario.
“Sydney wanted to be eligible to participate in nationals … She won more than one fight (and can go),” said Sensei Carlos Grisales.
“For Michelle, she had the okay to participate in nationals, but she wanted to place first or second. She did that in the Quebec Open.”
They both competed at the U16 and U18 levels.
“I’m really happy. They did really good overall … What they got over there in training camp and the tournament … was great.”
Next will be Edmonton in December as they prepare for the 2018 Alberta Winter Games.
