Child and Youth Advocate releases information on five years of Investigations

Jan 15, 2018 | 1:08 PM

A new report finds that more than 70 per cent of youths who committed suicide while involved in Alberta’s child intervention system over the past five years were Indigenous.

Alberta Child and Youth Advocate Del Graff says 25 of the 35 youths who took their own lives between 2012 and 2017 were Indigenous.

Graff says he’s “very sad” to report such numbers, but not surprised since he has raised the alarm about the Indigenous youth suicide crisis in several previous investigative reports.

The Alberta government says the high proportion of Indigenous young people in the report is the most pressing issue, and it expects to have a provincewide suicide strategy in place by the end of this year.
