Estimated 100 people at Aberta Party event in Grande Prairie

The Alberta Party brought a leadership meet and greet to Grande Prairie last night.

Candidate Stephen Mandel says there are many issues to worry about in this campaign.

“The carbon tax, the debt of the province, issues of free enterprise and impact on small business, the growth of the economy. There’s unending numbers of issues that keep coming up. Alberta right now is in real turmoil I think.”

Mandel says he is glad to see the economy getting stronger in our area.

“But, I’m sure, like all communities, there’s problems with crime, even though it’s down a bit. There’s still a lot of youth crime, drugs. There’s a lot of challenges in every municipality and we look forward to working with the mayor and the reeves around the area to see what all the challenges are, to see how we can work with them.”

Another candidate, Rick Fraser, estimates 100 people came out, despite the snowy weather.

“For some time now, people (have been) looking at the political landscape and not seeing themselves either in the NDP or the UCP and politics has become more vitriolic by the day. They’re looking for fresh, new ideas on how to conduct politics in the province, but also policies that are more sustainable and less divisive.”

He says the crowd included people from the former Progressive Conservative Party.

“There certainly were some former P.C. people there and some people I had recognized before. I think one of the exciting factors for Grande Prairie is it sounds like the average age is around 33-34 years old. I think there’s a shift of paradigms.”

Kara Levis is also running and also took part in last night’s Grande Prairie discussion.
