Rural municipalities want better communication with the province

Jan 30, 2018 | 1:48 PM

Some rural municipalities in the Peace say they are having trouble communicating with the provincial government.

A resolution originally started by The County of Northern Lights, now being pushed ahead by the County of Grande Prairie, will ask the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties to lobby the province to come up with a protocol for such communication.

County of Grande Prairie Reeve Leanne Beaupre says there have been some issues with this, although that depends on the ministry.

“There just seems to be so (many) different avenues to go. Some of them will respond to you directly, some you have to work through a scheduling assistant, some of them you’re required to have advance notice. It’s all over the board. There’s not one avenue that you can take that you are assured that you are getting a response back from who you made the request to.”

Beaupre adds another thing the municipalities would like addressed is getting advance notice if the premier or cabinet minister is going to be in this area.

“In the past, we actually were notified by the MLA that there would be a minister or a deputy minister or the Premier would be in our area, then we would make plans to host that person in our municipality and be able to take them around to the different areas and actually supply them with some information that they’re looking for.”

The resolution would have to be approved by the AAMD&C at its spring convention before lobbying could start.
