Kenney wants TMP emergency debate, says UCP has zero tolerance for inappropriate sexual behaviour

The leader of the United Conservative Party says he is willing to have an emergency debate in the legislature over the Trans Mountain Pipeline fight.

Jason Kenney says he is willing to put aside partisanship and have a show of unity “and have a unanimous motion criticizing the B.C. government’s attack, asking the federal government to come in and intervene and supporting the provincial government’s response. So, I’m willing to put aside party politics and put the province first in this fight for our economic future.”

Kenney adds he understands Highway 40 is “a real problem” for people in this area. He says improvements to that road would be prioritized should the UCP form the next government. Kenney cautions, though, a new government would inherit what he terms “a financial disaster.”

He says while there are some signs the economy is recovering, there are still problems.

“We still have the highest unemployment in the country outside of Atlantic Canada. We have well over 150,000 Albertans who are unemployed, tens of thousands of businesses that went bankrupt and many will never recover or come back and tens of billions of investment capital that has fled the province. While there are some superficial signs of recovery, there’s still a lot of people hurting.”

Sexually inappropriate behavior by people in many areas, including government, has come to the forefront in recent weeks.

Kenney says one problem is a lot of this behaviour does not cross what he calls “the criminal threshold.”

“That’s where you need workplaces that have their own policies. In our own caucus, I’ve said to our MLAs, of course, that any of this kind of activity, we have a zero-tolerance attitude and if anybody has either been a victim of it, or possibly a perpetrator of it, they should immediately inform us.”

Kenney says the UCP is promising a rigorous screening process for any future candidates.
