Point man named for future street construction downtown

The city has named a new point man for the Downtown Rehabilitation Project

Monty Haughian will act as a liaison between businesses, contractors and City Hall.

He says his aim is to solve any problems that may arise as quickly as possible, hopefully within 24 hours.

“I can’t really address the design issues and how it affects the businesses downtown, because this is going to affect the businesses and it has already. My goal is to try and control any instances of problems between the businesses, contractors, and what the city is doing. That’s my purview.”

The work is expected to start on the next phase in mid-May. This will see upgrades at and below ground level done on 100 Avenue between 100 and 102 Streets.

“We haven’t fully developed the full-time line, the scheduling of closures. You will expect detours around the downtown core. There will be no parking, per se. The tender did call for retaining front access to the businesses as best as possible.”

The first two phases were done on 101 Avenue the last couple summers.

Haughian adds he will have an office at the City on 99 building, located at 99 Avenue and 99 Street.

“I will be walking the streets downtown during the construction. I’m currently on rounds to meet with all the business owners to hand out business cards and explain what I can do for them as best I can. There’s situations that I won’t be able to fix, but I’m going to do my best to alleviate their concerns as best I can.’

One more phase would see similar upgrades on 100 Avenue between 98 and 100 Streets. When that is done will depend on budgets, council approval of bids, and other things.
