Grande Prairie to host Francophone cities conference

Mar 11, 2018 | 9:41 AM

A city committee has approved a request to host the 2018 Francophone and Francophile Cities Network mid term meeting.

Manager of Economic Development and Land for the city Brian Glavin, says the event would bring in delegates from across Canada and the U-S.

Budget for the conference is tabbed at around 44 thousand dollars.

“We are expecting somewhere around 10-15 thousand dollars in registration fees, and we are hoping to get most of the rest of the balance to be covered off through sponsorships. Any of the overages from there would be covered through the city’s operating budget.”

Glavin adds hosting the event would bring a number of benefits to the city.

“The city has a fairly large francophone population already, and the region has a fairly significant population.  We are membbers of the association and it will attract about 100 delegates from across North America.”

It is tentatively scheduled to be held in early October, with the location still to be determined.

Grande Prairie has been a member of the FFCN since 2015.
