Controlled burns planned for Wednesday

May 7, 2018 | 1:48 PM

The County of Grande Prairie says a controlled burn near the International Paper mill will start Wednesday.

Grass along the railway tracks will be burned in an effort to reduce the wildfire risk.

In a release, the County says people in the area may be able to see and smell smoke for what it calls “a short period of time.”

This burn will also serve as a chance to train firefighters.

A second, smaller burn will also be held east of Highway 40 and north of the Wapiti Bridge. This is also part of firefighter training.

The burns will only go ahead of the weather co-operates.
