Out-of-control wildfire closes Highway 35 north of High Level for over two hours

May 12, 2018 | 8:10 PM

UPDATE (11:07 p.m.): There are now nine active fires, two are out of control.

UPDATE (8:37 p.m.): High Level RCMP now say Highway 35 has re-opened in both directions.

Highway 35 north of High Level is closed because of an out-of-control wildfire.

The closure was put in place just after 6 p.m. today. Alberta Agriculture and Forestry says the highway is closed about 25 kilometres north of High Level near the airport. The last time the fire was measured, it was 300 hectares in size.

High Level RCMP say the blaze is burning on both sides of Highway 35.

The Hutch Lake Cabins and Campground have been evacuated as a precaution. A reception centre has been set up in Zama City.

The High Level area currently has 15 active wildfires, four of which are out-of-control. The fire hazard rating in that area is extreme.
