Downtown Rehabilitation and Streetscapes Project continues Monday

May 13, 2018 | 7:31 AM

Work on the Downtown Rehabilitation and Streetscapes project will resume Monday.

Crews will start blocking off 100 Avenue from 101 Street to 214 Place make way for work both below ground and at ground level.

City Representative Monty Haughian says underground pipes that are 80 years old will be replaced.

“I looked back in the history books and that was the first water and sewer systems put in down 100 Avenue. They were placed in the fall of 1938. That is the biggest concern is to update those, get them bigger so we can build larger buildings downtown.”

Detours to 102 Avenue will be in place.

“You detour to the west, towards Muskoseepi Park, and then back south to access 100 Avenue westbound, out towards the college, crossing the creek.  We are placing temporary traffic signals at those two intersections; 100 Street and 102 Avenue at the Tim Hortons and 102 Street and 102 Avenue.”

There are also plans to do some construction work in the intersection of 102 Street and 100 Avenue, meaning it will be closed for two weeks. New detours will be put in place or drivers can take a different route. After that, work will start between 100 and 101 Streets.

Haughian says most of the actual excavation along 101 Avenue is scheduled to start after the long weekend.

Haughian reminds everyone that downtown businesses will remain open during construction. They can be reached on foot.
