Alberta RCMP set for National Road Safety Week

May 15, 2018 | 5:30 AM

The Alberta RCMP and Sheriffs are participating in National Road Safety Week beginning Tuesday.

Grande Prairie RCMP Corporal Chris Warren says these dates are chosen for this time of year as road traffic increases and officers preach good driving habits.

“These days are strategically chosen as the Victoria Day long weekend typically marks the summer travel season for Albertan’s.”

He adds with what many consider as the start of summer being May long weekend, roadways in the province are busier.

“There is an increase in volume of traffic on our roadways, so we want to make the public aware of good driving practices and behaviours.”

Officers will be looking to crack down on negative driving habits.

“Our members that will be out on our roadways are going to be looking for all of those flaws that people tend to do while driving but shouldn’t, whether that’s distracted driving, having too much to drink and getting behind the wheel, excessive speed, unsafe lane changes, you name it.”

The campaign is part of Canada’s Road Safety Strategy which aims to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world by 2025.

The event goes until May 21. More officers may be noticed on the road on May 19 (Saturday) as it is National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day.
