Wildfire danger at very high in Grande Prairie Forest Area

May 23, 2018 | 2:04 PM

The wildfire hazard has gone up to very high in the Grande Prairie Forest Area.

Warmer weather and drying conditions have pushed the hazard up, according to Wildfire Information Officer Kelly Burke.

The hot weather in the summer increases the risk of wildfire and people are asked to refrain from riding off-highway vehicles in areas that have lots of grass and dry vegetation.

Since the beginning of April, there have been 17 wildfires in the area. In the province, there have been 448 fires.

A Fire Advisory remains in place which means no new fire permits will be issued, current permits are valid, and safe campfires are allowed.

Alberta Fire Bans information is available online with details on restrictions, bans, and advisories. Use of exploding targets, fireworks, or leaving a campfire in a forest area can result in fines up to $287.
