Local app creator offers tips on garage sales

Jun 16, 2018 | 6:45 AM

The creator of Glickin, an app made specifically for garage sales, is providing some tips for shoppers and second-hand entrepreneurs.

For shoppers, Travis Lutz says it really depends what you are looking for. For selection, he recommends getting to the sale as early as possible. For those seeking deals, the last hour is a prime time for getting the most bang for your buck.

If you are looking for specific items, pay attention to the type of neighbourhood you are in. If it has younger families nearby, chances are there will be baby items or children’s items in the sale.

According to Lutz, you can find yard and garage sales on Thursday and Friday afternoons as well as during the weekend in the Swan City. He says each community is different but for Grande Prairie there are no days off limits. He does admit that he has never noticed one on a Monday.

“Junky handmade signs are awesome. A piece of paper and no effort is what I am looking for,” said Lutz.

He’s a big fan of neighbourhood garage sales where people can walk from house-to-house to get their deals.

For people holding a sale, the question is to put a price tag or not to put a price tag. Lutz says he is asked his opinion on placing a price on items often. For him, it is about what you are selling the items for. If you are selling to make money, price tags will help. If you are looking to purge some items, go price tag free.

“It feels so good to get rid of (stuff) that you don’t use or need. Free up space in your house and actually, your life. All of that stuff that you don’t use is actually causing you stress. When you release it into the world you feel so good. It is freedom. You have to have the mindset that it isn’t about making money, it is about feeling good.”

Lutz says having a yard sale is always an opportunity to invite people over to visit and have a party on the front lawn.
