Local soccer players pondering 2026 World Cup as action in Russia is underway

Jun 16, 2018 | 6:00 AM

With the 2018 World Cup underway in Russia, and the announcement of Canada co-hosting the event in 2026, its a dream come true for soccer enthusiasts.

District referee assistant for Alberta Soccer and head referee for the region Ken Loudon says Canadian Soccer has never experienced anything like it before.

“The impact on what that’s going to do for Soccer Canada, never mind the local associations is going to be monumental. Knowing that it’s going to be in Edmonton which is the furthest west next to Toronto and Montreal will be huge.”

Loudon expects to see Commonwealth Stadium sold out for the games as it attracts soccer die-hards from across western Canada.

The chance to host such a big soccer event presents the opportunity for youth players to represent the nation.

“What that’s going to do for development at the grassroots level right through the national level in their programs overall, that’s a carrot that’s hanging out there for opportunity knocks,” said Loudon.

Executive director of the Grande Prairie Soccer Association Dylan Cartier said the players will have a lot of push to succeed.

“That driving force for players will be a driving force for coaches as well. To support and encourage the development of these players getting to that world-class level. It’s a full circle from coaching to training to the skill development of the players.”

Canada and Mexico will host 10 games each in 2026, while the United States will get 60.
