AHS cautions about potential of West Nile virus

Jul 22, 2018 | 8:25 AM

Alberta Health Services are reminding residents to take necessary steps to protect themselves against West Nile virus.

Dr. Kathryn Koliaska, a Medical Officer of Health with the North Zone, says the mosquitoes that carry West Nile tend to be in highest numbers during mid to late summer.

Although there have been no cases in the province this year, there were 514 cases of West Nile virus between 2003 and 2017.

The virus develops into West Nile Non-Neurological syndrome, with symptoms including fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, skin rash, swollen glands and headaches.

Some cases do develop into the more series West Nile Neurological Syndrome, with symptoms of that incliding tremors, swallowing problems, unconsciousness, paralysis and even death.

Steps to avoid contracting West Nile include using insect repellent with DEET, wearing long-sleeved, light coloured shirts, pants and a hat while doing activities outdoors, or staying inside at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
