Grand opening being planned for Collision Reporting Centre

Jul 28, 2018 | 6:11 AM

A place to report fender benders is set to launch this August in Grande Prairie.

The City, RCMP, and Accidental Support Services International have teamed up to create a Collision Reporting Centre. This is the first of its kind for an RCMP policed region and it will be opening in the Eastlink Centre on August 23.

City Superintendent for Public Safety Chris Manuel says people that have been in a collision that doesn’t result in an injury can be helped at this location.

“It is an industry-funded initiative. All the staff is paid for through industry as opposed to the city. Presently, the city has employees that process the data collection,” said Manuel.

On top of saving tax dollars, statistics will be produced in a timelier fashion.

“Analytically, the software system that is used at the centre provides a real-time mapping or picture of where collisions are happening and why they are occurring. Right now, to get the same level of data, it takes up to 18-months,” he said.

Medicine Hat and Lethbridge are other Alberta cities with a similar centre.

A grand opening ceremony with ribbon cutting is being planned with details to be released closer to the opening day. Once it is open, hours of operation with be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday to Friday.
